Asylum
The U.S. government offers asylum to people who fear for their safety if they return to their home country based on one of the following:
Race
Religion
Nationality
Membership in a particular social group
Political opinion
To become an asylee, an individual must be able to prove past persecution or fear of future persecution. This can be very difficult to do. Because asylum cases are often legally complex, most applicants need the help of an attorney.
